Our high flow filters are an effective way to remove a number of chemicals including chlorine, benzene, radon, solvents trihalomethane compounds, volatile organic chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides and hundreds of other man-made chemicals that may come into contact with your tap water. In addition, (GAC) carbon filters remove lead, mercury, bad tastes and odors from your water.
What maintenance is required with a whole house carbon filter?
Our whole house carbon filters do not require monthly or yearly maintenance. We use a Millennium valve for backwashing the unit weekly with fresh water. Backwashing the filter rinses the carbon and moves the carbon media around in the tank preventing channeling and allowing for maximum use of the carbon media. Our high quality carbon lasts about 7 years with normal household water usage. After 7 years we recommend having the carbon media replaced.
What do whole house carbon filters remove from water?
Carbon filters are very effective at removing a number of chemicals including chlorine, benzene, radon, solvents trihalomethane compounds, volatile organic chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides and hundreds of other man-made chemicals that may come into contact with tap water as it proceeds through your cities delivery system. In addition, filters remove bad tastes and odors from the water. Granular activated carbon filters are a relatively inexpensive way to effectively treat your water.
How do carbon filters work?
Carbon filters work so well because of their large surface area. One pound of carbon has a surface area of approximately 125 acres. Granular activated carbon has a slightly positive charge so it can attract impurities. There are many factors that affect the effectiveness such as the amount of carbon in the unit, the flow of water, the length of time contaminants spend in contact with the carbon and the particle size. Our whole house carbon filters have a full 1 cu ft of high quality pharmaceutical grade coconut shell carbon.

"The lowest level at which humans can smell chlorine and notice its irritant properties generally provides sufficient warning of exposure; however, chronic exposure to chlorine causes adaptation of the sense of smell (olfactory fatigue) and tolerance to its irritant effects. Because of this, persons with a history of prolonged exposure lose the ability to identify when they are being exposed to chlorine."

"A major challenge for water suppliers is how to control and limit the risks from pathogens and disinfection byproducts. It is important to provide protection from pathogens while simultaneously minimizing health risks to the population from disinfection byproducts."
